Retrofitting Latinx Into the Wisconsin Historical Narrative

Student Work
Oral Histories of Latina Veterans
Since January 2026, Escuela Verde High School (Milwaukee,) senior student volunteer, Xitlali Espinoza Madrigal has been researching and conducting oral histories of Latina veterans. Under the supervision of Andrea-Teresa (Tess) Arenas, WLHC founder, Xitlali has been meeting weekly to discuss her progress on this groundbreaking research. Xitlali has interviewed 3 veterans thus far and she continues her work to identify more Latina veterans. When asked why she was interested in Latina veterans she said, “ I think it is important to know how our women have contributed to our nation by serving in the military.” Xitlali is currently creating a project presentation which she will share with her research findings with her classmates and Escuela Verde instructors. Congratulations Xitlali!

Mecha de UW-Madison: Story Map
This Story Map, created by Karla Martinez, explores the history of Mecha de UW–Madison, from their creation in the 1970s to their activism and cultural events. It highlights significant events and activities throughout Mecha’s history showing the importance of understanding the significance of this Latine student organization and its lasting presence on campus. Their role at UW–Madison was influential in shaping Chicane students’ sense of self, cultural pride, and resistance particularly within a predominantly white institution. Despite facing discrimination and repeated displacement, Mechistas have continued to use activism, education, and cultural expression as forms of resistance and community-building. Please use the links below to dive deeper into the historical impact that this organization has had in our communities.
